How to use digital stickers in Goodnotes

Digital stickers come in a variety of formats, but the Elements Tool makes it easy to import and use them in Goodnotes. Let’s take a look.

Image of the Elements Tool in Goodnotes with the most recent stickers used and a large red arrow pointing to the + icon at the bottom.
The Elements Tool keeps all your stickers within easy access. Scroll over and hit the + icon to import new stickers to your collections. (Goodnotes / Screenshot by Lindsay Armstrong / Paperlike)

Using the Goodnotes Elements Tool

When the Elements Tool was added to GoodNotes 5, it revolutionized the way digital stickers are used.

This cool feature allows you to save images or stickers into collections for easy reuse, liberating you from the tedium of ceaseless copy/pasting and drag/dropping.

To add your stickers to the Elements Tool, you can either:

1. Use the Image or Lasso tool:

  • Import your stickers into Goodnotes (more on this below).
  • Select each individual sticker you’ve imported with either the Image tool or the Lasso tool.
  • Press and hold on the sticker.
  • Tap Add Element from the pop-up menu.

2. Import from the Elements Tool:

  • Select the Elements icon from the toolbar on any note.
  • Tap the + icon.
  • Select Import from.
  • Choose your sticker file.
  • Name the collection.
  • Tap Create.

When importing individual PNGs with the Elements Tool, you will follow the same process, but you’ll have to select and choose your sticker file for each sticker, which is a bit of a pain.

An alternative (and quicker!) method is to save your individual PNGs into your photos.

To do this:

  • Open your Files app.
  • Open the folder with your individual PNG stickers.
  • Tap Select All.
  • Tap Save [# of] Images.

Then, instead of selecting Import from, you’ll select Add Photos. From there, you can bulk-select all the individual stickers, tap Add, and then follow the rest of the process.

Once you have all your stickers saved into collections in the Elements Tool, you can simply tap the Elements icon from any page in your digital planner or notes to quickly access them.

Goodnotes file with pre-cropped stickers

Many creators offer stickers in a .goodnotes file that only works in the Goodnotes app. There are two ways to import these files.

From the Files app:

  1. Open the sticker file on your iPad.
  2. Tap the Share icon.
  3. Select the Goodnotes app or Open in Goodnotes.
  4. Choose the folder or note where you’d like your stickers to go.

From Goodnotes:

  1. Tap + New.
  2. Tap Import.
  3. Locate the sticker pack in your files.
  4. Select the file and tap Open.

Once you’ve got these pre-cropped Goodnotes digital stickers imported into the app, you can click on the individual stickers to copy and paste them throughout your notes or follow the directions from the previous section to add them to your Elements Tool.

JPG or PNG sticker sheets

Some digital stickers are offered as an image sheet rather than as an individual sticker file (more on individual files below).

Since stickers in this format aren’t in a Goodnotes file, you can use these in Notability or any other notetaking app that supports stickers.

The importing process may differ slightly between notetaking apps, but for Goodnotes, you’ll follow the same process as you used for Goodnotes files (above).

The key difference when working with sticker sheets compared with any other format is that you can’t import them with the Elements Tool

Instead, you’ll have to import the whole sheet into your notes. From there, you’ll use the Lasso tool to crop and select each individual sticker, as these are not already pre-cropped for use.

Once you lasso the sticker, you’ll see a pop-up menu where you can choose to either copy and paste your stickers or add them to the Elements Tool.

If you’re only planning to use a sticker once, you can just copy and paste it. If you want to be able to reuse it later, be sure to add it to your Elements for future access. Plus, once you add all the stickers from the sheet, you can delete the sticker sheet out of your notes.

Individual PNG files

Digital planner stickers often come as individual PNG files. These can be used in any sticker-supported notetaking app.

Individual stickers are not really worth importing unless you use the Elements Tool (explained above).

If you’d rather try the hard way (to each his own), you will:

  • Open your Goodnotes planner to the page you’d like to use.
  • Open the Files app in split view.
  • Open the folder with your PNG files.
  • Select the sticker you’d like to use.

At this point, you can either:

  • Drag and drop the sticker into the desired location on your planner.
  • Copy the sticker, choose the Lasso tool in Goodnotes, use your Apple Pencil to tap and hold in the desired location, and select Paste from the pop-up menu that appears.

Whether you start with a Goodnotes file, sticker sheets, or individual PNGs, once you’ve got a sticker in your notes, the editing process is the same. You can use the Lasso tool to resize, rotate, duplicate, or move your sticker anywhere on the page.

Where to find digital stickers

Finding awesome digital stickers isn’t as difficult as you might expect. There are plenty of different places you can explore, each offering a variety of stickers to match your style.

Let's break down where to find the perfect stickers:

Goodnotes Marketplace

Goodnotes has its very own digital marketplace built into the app. Here you can find both freebies and premium offerings of stickers, templates, digital notebooks, planners, and more.

The best part? Any stickers you download from the Marketplace will automatically be added to the Elements Tool, so no extra setup is required.

And, if you’ve paid for Goodnotes 6, there’s even a section of Subscriber Specials, which includes a bunch more free stickers and other goodies.

Etsy

Etsy is like a goldmine for stickers made by independent artists and creators. You can browse through different shops to find stickers ranging from cute illustrations to intricate designs.

There are so many options available on this platform that it can be overwhelming. Before you start your search, think about what kind of stickers you want or need to help you narrow down the options.

Internet search

Of course, you can always just do a search on the internet. Many of the digital stickers you’ll find in this kind of search are from digital planner creators and include stickers that complement their planners.

The best digital planners also come with sticker packs, so you can kill two birds with one stone by finding a planner that already comes with everything you need.

How to make your own digital stickers to use in Goodnotes

Need a specific sticker and can’t find it anywhere, or are you a super creative person? Consider creating your own digital stickers.

Whether they’re for personal use or you want to try to sell your own sticker packs on a platform like Etsy, making digital stickers is fairly easy.

For basic designs, you can create your sticker right in the Goodnotes app. Simply draw the sticker, circle it with the Lasso tool, and tap Add Element. It’s that easy!

For more detailed drawings and artwork, you can draw your sticker in a drawing app, like Procreate or Canva, and then export it as a PNG. Then follow the import process for individual PNGs (or a sticker sheet if that’s what you made).
